SEO earns positions in search results. AEO earns a place inside the answers AI assistants give. GEO earns citations in generative search features such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. They share the same foundations (a fast, well-structured, authoritative website and a clearly defined brand), so the most efficient approach is to run them as one program with three sets of goals.
The short version
| Aspect | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | Generative Engine Optimization |
| Goal | Rank in the results list | Be the answer an assistant recommends | Be a source a generative result is built from |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity |
| What wins | Relevance, links, technical health | Clear entity, direct answers, trusted mentions | Quotable passages, topic coverage, corroborated facts |
| Main measure | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Share of answers, accuracy | Citations in AI results, AI-feature impressions |
The labels overlap in practice, and you will see people use AEO and GEO to mean the same thing. The distinction below is the one we use with clients, because it maps to different work.
SEO: earn the ranking
Search engine optimization is the work of ranking a website in the classic list of search results. It covers:
- Technical health: crawling, indexing, site speed, mobile experience and clean structure.
- Relevance: pages that match what people search for, organised into clear topics.
- Authority: links and mentions from other reputable sites.
SEO is still the foundation. AI assistants and generative search features lean heavily on the web's best-structured, most authoritative pages, and those are usually the pages that rank.
AEO: become the recommendation
Answer Engine Optimization focuses on conversational assistants. When someone asks ChatGPT or Claude which product to choose, the assistant writes a short answer that names a few brands. AEO is the work of being one of them.
The distinctive work in AEO:
- Entity building: making your brand unmistakable to machines, with consistent descriptions, schema and profiles.
- Question-led content: pages that answer the questions buyers actually ask, in the first lines.
- Off-site mentions: appearing on the review sites, comparison lists and forums assistants draw on.
- Answer tracking: asking the assistants a fixed set of questions and measuring how often you are named.

GEO: become the source
Generative Engine Optimization focuses on search features that write an answer from several sources and cite them, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. The goal is for your pages to be among the sources used, and for your brand to be credited.
The distinctive work in GEO:
- Coverage of related questions: generative search often breaks one query into many related sub-questions (sometimes called query fan-out). Sites that answer the surrounding questions are more likely to be drawn on.
- Quotable structure: short definitions, clear headings, lists, tables and specific facts that can be lifted as a passage.
- Corroboration: the same facts about your brand and products across your site and trusted third parties.
- Citation tracking: checking which sources the AI features cite for your target queries, and whether yours are among them.
Where they overlap
All three depend on the same core:
- A fast, crawlable, well-structured website.
- A clearly defined brand: what you do, for whom, and why you are credible.
- Content that genuinely answers questions better than the alternatives.
- Authority built through mentions and links from sources people trust.
That overlap is why running them separately wastes money. One content plan, one technical roadmap and one measurement dashboard can serve all three.
Which one do you need?
| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| New brand, new website | SEO foundations built in from launch, then AEO and GEO |
| You rank well on Google but assistants never mention you | AEO |
| Your traffic is falling on queries that now show AI Overviews | GEO |
| Buyers research carefully before buying (B2B, finance, health) | AEO and GEO together |
| Most buyers search locally ("near me") | SEO first, with local profiles that also feed assistants |
How to run all three without tripling the work
- Build one question set. List the questions and searches your buyers use, from discovery to comparison to purchase. Use it for keyword targeting, answer tracking and citation checks alike.
- Write each page to answer first. A page that answers its question clearly in the opening lines serves search rankings, assistant answers and generative citations at the same time.
- Treat your brand as data. Keep one set of facts about your company and products and publish them consistently: on your site, in schema and on external profiles.
- Measure in one place. Put rankings, AI answer share and AI citations side by side, so you can see which work moves which number.
