What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is a separate tab and experience in Google Search, launched in 2025, built for longer, more complex questions. Instead of a results page, the user gets a written answer, can ask follow-ups in the same thread, and sees links to the pages used.
Google describes a "query fan-out" technique behind it: the system splits a question into several sub-topics, runs searches for each at once, and combines what it finds into one answer.
Why it matters
- Complex, high-intent questions ("compare X and Y for a small team") increasingly go to AI experiences.
- Because AI Mode searches many related questions, pages that cover a topic thoroughly have more ways to be used.
- The follow-up format means a brand can be introduced early and compared later in the same conversation.
How to be used in AI Mode
- Build pages that answer the main question and the natural follow-ups.
- Structure content with clear headings so individual sections can be retrieved.
- Publish specifics: comparisons, pricing ranges, requirements, step-by-step guidance.
- Make sure the site is indexed and eligible for snippets, since AI Mode draws on Google's index.
