What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are answer summaries written by Google's Gemini models and shown above the regular results for some searches. Each overview explains the topic briefly and links to the pages it drew on, shown as source cards or inline links. Google rolled them out widely in 2024 after testing them as the Search Generative Experience.
Google shows an overview only when its systems decide it adds value, so many queries have none, and the same query can show one on some days and not on others.
Why they matter
- They take the top of the results page, so users read them before any ranking.
- Some users get their answer without clicking, which changes how organic traffic behaves.
- The pages they cite gain visibility and clicks from high-intent searches.
How pages get chosen
Google says the same systems that rank pages decide which pages an AI Overview can use. There's no separate markup to request inclusion. Pages that are indexed, eligible for snippets and clearly answer part of the question are the candidates.
You can limit how Google uses your content with the standard controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet also apply to AI Overviews.
Best practices
- Make sure the page is indexed and allowed to show snippets.
- Answer the core question in plain language near the top of the page.
- Cover the follow-up questions a searcher is likely to have.
- Keep facts current and consistent across your site.
- Track which of your target queries show an overview and who is cited.
