Query fan-out

Query fan-out is a technique where an AI search system breaks one question into several related sub-questions, searches for each, and combines the results. Sites that answer the surrounding questions are more likely to be used.

What is query fan-out?

A single question often hides several. "Which CRM should a 10-person agency use?" involves pricing, integrations, ease of setup, reporting and reviews. With query fan-out, the AI system issues searches for those sub-questions at the same time, gathers results for each, and writes one answer from all of them. Google has described this technique as the basis of AI Mode.

Why it matters

  • Your page can be used for a sub-question even if it doesn't rank for the original query.
  • Sites that cover the questions around a topic get more chances to be retrieved.
  • Thin pages that answer only the headline question are used less.

How to optimize for it

  1. List the follow-up questions a buyer would have about each topic.
  2. Answer them on the page, or on closely linked pages in a topic cluster.
  3. Use headings that name each sub-question clearly.
  4. Compare your coverage with pages that are cited today to find gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the sub-queries an AI system runs?

Not directly. You can infer them from related searches, "People also ask" questions and the sources cited in answers.

Does this mean longer pages are better?

Not automatically. Complete coverage matters more than length. Clear sections that each answer one question work best.
