What is Answer Engine Optimization?
AEO is the practice of making your brand the answer AI assistants give. When a buyer asks "which payroll software is best for a startup?" an assistant doesn't show ten links. It writes an answer that names a few brands and cites a few sources. AEO is everything you do so that one of those names is yours, described accurately, with a link back to your site.
It overlaps with SEO, because most assistants search the web before they answer. But it adds work SEO alone doesn't cover: making sure AI crawlers can read you, stating clear facts about your brand, answering the exact questions buyers ask, and earning mentions on the review sites, lists and publications assistants lean on.
Why AEO matters
- Buyers ask assistants before they search. Many purchase journeys now start with a question to ChatGPT or Perplexity rather than a Google search.
- Answers name only a few brands. There's no page two. If you're not in the answer, the buyer may never reach your site.
- Assistants repeat what they read. Wrong or missing facts about your brand get repeated to every buyer who asks.
How AEO works
- Access. AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot must be allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall, and your content must be readable without JavaScript.
- Entity clarity. Your name, category, products, prices and locations are stated consistently on your site, in structured data and across the web.
- Answer-ready content. Pages answer buyer questions directly in the first sentences, then support the answer with specifics.
- Third-party proof. Assistants favor brands that independent sources mention: reviews, comparisons, industry lists, news.
- Measurement. A fixed set of buyer questions is asked across assistants on a schedule to track how often you're named.
Example
A dental clinic chain finds that when people ask Gemini for "the best dental clinic for implants in Pune," the answer names three competitors and cites a local review site. The AEO work: add a page that answers implant questions directly, publish clear pricing ranges, fix the clinic's listing on that review site, and track the same question every week.
Best practices
- Start with the questions buyers actually ask, in their words.
- Put a direct, quotable answer in the first two sentences of each page.
- Keep brand facts identical everywhere: site, schema, profiles and directories.
- Earn mentions on the sources the assistants already cite in your category.
- Measure the same questions over time instead of judging one answer.
Common mistakes
- Treating AEO as a set of tricks. Assistants reward being the most useful, best-supported source.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a CDN or firewall setting.
- Judging results from a single chat. Answers vary between runs, so track trends.
