What is SEO?
SEO is the practice of earning unpaid visibility in search results. When someone searches for what you sell, SEO is what decides whether your page appears on the first screen, far down the results, or not at all.
It rests on three pillars:
- Technical SEO: search engines can crawl, render and index your pages quickly and without errors.
- Content: your pages answer what searchers want better than the alternatives.
- Authority: other reputable sites link to and mention you, which signals trust.
Why SEO still matters in the age of AI
AI search features and many assistants search the web before they answer, and they draw on pages that search systems already rank and trust. Strong SEO is therefore the base that answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) build on.
How SEO works, step by step
- Research the searches your buyers make and what they expect to find.
- Fix technical issues that stop pages being crawled, indexed or loaded quickly.
- Create or improve pages that best answer each search.
- Earn links and mentions from relevant sites.
- Measure rankings, traffic and conversions, and repeat.
Common mistakes
- Chasing high-volume keywords the site can't realistically win yet.
- Publishing lots of thin pages instead of fewer thorough ones.
- Measuring traffic without tracking leads or revenue.
