What is a SERP?

The SERP is everything you see after pressing search. For many queries it contains much more than ten blue links: ads at the top, an AI Overview, a map with local businesses, a featured snippet, videos, images, "People also ask" questions and shopping results.

Why it matters

Your visibility depends not only on your ranking but on what surrounds it. Ranking third below an AI Overview, a local pack and four ads may put you out of sight on a phone. Studying the SERP for a keyword tells you which kind of page, and which feature, can win it.

How to analyze a SERP

  1. Search your target keyword in a private window, on mobile and desktop.
  2. Note the features shown and who holds them.
  3. Look at the page types that rank: guides, product pages, lists, tools.
  4. Match your page to the format the SERP rewards.
