Redirect checker
Enter an address to see every redirect hop, with status codes, for it and its http, https, www and non-www versions. We flag chains, loops, temporary redirects and versions that end up in different places.
What it checks
Follow every redirect hop and check your http and www versions.
- Every hop with its status code and time, up to 10 hops
- All four versions (http and https, with and without www) and whether they end at the same address
- Chains, loops, temporary redirects (302, 307) used where a permanent one (301, 308) belongs, and meta refresh redirects
- HTTPS certificate problems and whether the final page sends HSTS
Frequently asked questions
301 or 302: which should I use?
Use 301 (or 308) when a page has moved for good, such as http to https or an old URL to a new one. It tells search engines to move the page's ranking signals. Use 302 or 307 only for temporary moves.
Why do redirect chains matter?
Each hop adds a delay for visitors, and crawlers may stop following after several. Point every version and old address straight at the final URL in one hop.
What should my four versions do?
Pick one version, usually https with or without www, and make the other three redirect to it in a single 301. Then make that version the canonical in your pages and sitemap.
