Referring domain

A referring domain is a unique website linking to yours. Ten links from one site count as one referring domain, which is why SEO tools track referring domains alongside total backlinks.

What is a referring domain?

If a blog links to you from 40 different posts, you have 40 backlinks but one referring domain. Links from many different, relevant sites generally indicate broader authority than many links from a single site.

Why it matters

Growth in referring domains from relevant sites is one of the clearest signs a site's authority is increasing, and comparing counts with competitors shows how big the gap is.
