Helpful content

Helpful content is Google's term for content created primarily to benefit people rather than to rank. Google's ranking systems aim to reward it, and to demote content made mainly for search engines.

What is helpful content?

Google asks creators to focus on "people-first" content: content written for a specific audience that leaves them feeling they learned enough to reach their goal. It contrasts this with content made mainly to attract search clicks, such as pages summarizing others without adding value, or covering topics only because they trend.

A separate "helpful content system" launched in 2022 and was folded into Google's core ranking systems in 2024.

How to create it

  1. Write for a defined audience with a real need.
  2. Add first-hand experience, original data or expert insight.
  3. Answer the question fully so the reader doesn't need to search again.
  4. Say who wrote it and why they're credible.
  5. Remove or improve pages that exist only to rank.
