What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals measure how a page feels to real visitors:

MetricMeasuresGood
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)How fast the main content appears2.5 s or less
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks200 ms or less
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)How much the layout jumps while loading0.1 or less

A page passes when at least 75% of real visits meet each threshold, measured from Chrome users.

Why they matter

They're part of Google's page experience signals, but more importantly they affect whether visitors stay. Slow, jumpy pages lose people before they read anything.

How to improve them

  • LCP: fast server response, optimized hero images, fewer render-blocking resources.
  • INP: less and lighter JavaScript, and breaking up long tasks.
  • CLS: set image dimensions and reserve space for embeds and ads.
