What is INP?
INP observes the interactions during a visit and reports one of the slowest: the time from the user's action until the screen visibly updates. If a menu takes half a second to open after a tap, INP captures that.
What causes poor INP
- Long JavaScript tasks that block the main thread.
- Heavy third-party scripts (chat widgets, tag managers, trackers).
- Large DOM updates on every interaction.
How to improve it
- Reduce and defer JavaScript, especially third-party scripts.
- Break long tasks into smaller chunks.
- Give immediate visual feedback, then do heavy work.
- Load non-essential scripts after the page is interactive.
