Orphan page

An orphan page is a page with no internal links pointing to it. Search engines and visitors struggle to find it, and it receives none of the authority internal links pass.

What is an orphan page?

If no page on your site links to a URL, crawlers can only find it through a sitemap or external links, and visitors can't navigate to it. Orphans often come from old campaigns, removed menu items, or pages published without being linked.

How to find them

Crawl your site by following links, then compare the URLs found with the URLs in your sitemap or in analytics. Pages that exist but weren't reached by the crawl are orphans.

How to fix them

  1. If the page matters, link to it from related pages with descriptive anchor text.
  2. If it's outdated, redirect it to its replacement or remove it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a page in my sitemap still an orphan?

Yes, if nothing links to it. Sitemaps help discovery, but internal links signal importance.
