Long-tail keyword

A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific search, like "payroll software for a 10-person startup in India". Each one has fewer searches, but together they make up much of search demand and often convert better.

What is a long-tail keyword?

"Shoes" is a head term. "Waterproof trail running shoes for wide feet" is long-tail. Long-tail searches are specific, so they tell you exactly what the searcher wants, and fewer sites target them directly.

Why they matter

  • They're easier to rank for, especially for newer sites.
  • Specific searches often signal a buyer close to deciding.
  • They resemble the questions people ask AI assistants.

How to find them

  1. Look at "People also ask" and autocomplete suggestions.
  2. Read the questions customers ask your sales and support teams.
  3. Check the queries in Search Console where you get impressions but few clicks.

Frequently asked questions

Should I create a page for every long-tail keyword?

No. Group closely related ones on a single thorough page; create separate pages only for different intents.
